Research Interests

My research is focused on theory and computer modeling of metallic materials, particularly materials interfaces, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of alloys, atomic diffusion, and mechanical behavior. Specific research topics include:
  • Models of atomic interaction in materials. Development of semi-empirical many-body interatomic potentials (a.k.a. force fields) from experimental data and first-principles calculations.
  • Methods of theoretical and computational prediction of thermodynamic properties of materials.
  • Interfaces in materials, including grain boundaries, interphase boundaries, solid-liquid interfaces, and surfaces.
  • Interface thermodynamics, motion, chemical reactions and cohesion. Relationships between interface structure, chemistry, and diffusion.
  • Defects and diffusion in intermetallic compounds: diffusion mechanisms, prediction of diffusion coefficients, relation to creep deformation and other high-temperature properties.
  • Plastic deformation and fracture of metals and intermetallic compounds. Grain boundary sliding and cleavage.
